Josh Nichol

Josh Nichol

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness we announce the unexpected death of our beloved CEO, Josh Nichol. For more than 40 years, Josh’s larger-than-life personality, generosity and sense of humor were enjoyed by his colleagues and clients—whom he considered family.

People often referred to Josh as an industry icon and an advertising guru, but at the end of the day he was a humble guy who never took himself too seriously. His work, clients and team brought him joy each and every day.

Josh’s top priority was team morale, he knew everyone on a first-name basis and would go out of his way to make their work enjoyable. Josh loved getting to know new hires and making them feel comfortable. One of his greatest pleasures was entertaining summer interns with ad agency war stories. And, one of his disappointments came with COVID when he couldn’t meet new team members in person.

Josh had the uncanny ability to inspire the most junior and the most senior staff members. His wide smile, quick wit and big laugh endeared him to all. No matter how difficult the situation, he was always able to roll with the punches and find the silver lining in every cloud.

Over the years we worked closely with Josh to create a collaborative culture, a talented team, and a family environment. His impact on our company is indelible and his legacy will live on each and every day, we already miss him terribly. We know everyone feels the same way and invite you to share comments, stories, photos and favorite memories of Josh.

Warmly,
Andrea and Trey

Josh, it doesn't feel real that you’re gone. I never would’ve imagined the amount of impact you’d have on my life from the day I met you. There aren’t a lot of CEOs that go out of their way the way you did. It always made my day when you asked me how things were going in Ewa Beach. A “thank you” doesn’t cut it for all the mentorship you’ve given me. My goal is to pay forward all the humility and kindness you've shown me. You really became family over the years and I’m going to miss you dearly.

I am almost without words stumbling upon this news today. Josh played a pivotal role in my career as a young African-American woman trying to break into the advertising industry in San Francisco many years ago. We grew close over the years and he taught me so many lessons that helped guide my career. In fact, some of his advice truly saved my life. Josh was an incredible presenter, mentor, family man and friend. My heart goes out to his family during this very difficult time.

It has taken us this long to come to this site and put a few word for Josh. A few words that would never suffice what Josh was to us. So many of our sentiments have already been proclaimed. In a few words: Josh was a good man. We are confident that when he arrived in heaven he was told: "well done, good and faithful servant" Mathew 25:21

Josh and I became best friends in high school, and many adventures followed. We once started a piano tuning company (don't ask). I still have the letterhead. I'm so happy to see that it was his human qualities, mentioned so often here, his gregariousness, his laugh, that made him a success as much as anything else. A couple of years ago at dinner at his house, he and I passed a guitar back and forth across the table into the wee hours, trading songs. It's memories like that I'll now treasure.

I was only with H&L Partners for a short time, and only met Josh a handful of times, but it was clear that he led by example. His infectious energy and laughter made him, and everyone in his circle who followed his lead, a joy to be around. I'm sure his presence will be missed, though it will also be felt through the team and culture he built.

First met Josh when we formed GMO back in advertising's Paleolithic Age. Great with creatives, great with clients, great at reminding everyone there was more to life than punching a clock at the ad factory. Over the years, my wife Shelly and I took many memorable vacations with Josh and Marci, mostly to Italy. His signature infectious laugh always came along. It was a beacon, proving that even in a packed piazza we couldn't lose him. He was still with us. And always will be.

Josh wasn't so much of a boss as he was Camp Leader. Every day, his bright smile and laid back style made him an inspiration to all. He was both the consummate ad guy and a really good person. He championed our H&L Ski Trips, BBQs, holiday parties, happy hours...and I guess we must have gotten some work done in between too. I will truly miss him.

Very sad news indeed. Josh taught me about wine, Steve Earl, resonances of old school hi-fi systems, golf, guitars, food, cars and so many other things. Most of all Josh taught me not to take any of the advertising stuff too seriously, family and friends is was life is really about. He was always a good sounding board for me and although I haven’t talked to him in a few years, I know we’d fall right back into conversation in no time. I’ll miss you Josh

We lived next door to Josh and Marcie and their beautiful family for many years. Fourth of July parties watching Orinda fireworks from their decks, Josh at the barbecue. I will never forget standing behind Jerry Jeff Walker as Josh answered the doorbell at his 40th birthday party - a surprise Marcie cooked up, as the Walkers were scouting Stanford for their daughter. The look on his face...stunned speechless - we got out our Martin D28s (Josh's and mine both 74's, a few serial numbers apart).

Josh had a fantastic energy. His personality and laugh filled the room. He was immensely proud of the accomplishments of both his own family, whom he spoke of often and with full adoration, and his agency family at H&L. Josh always took the time to connect with people and he always took time to let the entire agency know how proud he was of the work we accomplished together and of the incredible drive and intelligence we possessed as a team. I believe a persons worth and value are represented by the people who knew him best. Seeing the remarks and condolences are a reflection of a guy who lived large and loved everybody. And everybody loved him back; rightly so. He was sensational on so many levels I can't begin. I am crestfallen by his passing. But I do take some solace that he left us on the field of battle...the tennis court. He was so stylish that he departed from this veil of tears, racket in hand. I loved the man.

Josh ran H&L like one giant family. I know a lot of companies say that, but he truly embodied it. Without knowing me from Adam, he flew in to Columbia, SC all the way from CA to take me to dinner before my first meeting. After meeting him, this was no surprise. He cared. We immediately became buddies, always bantering back and forth (mostly to hear that big laugh!) and dreaming big over a glass of red. Josh called to check on his PEOPLE, not just the business. So lucky to have known him.

Brilliant business partner. Trusted friend. The best laugh ever. Ever. A debrief over wine after (fill in the blank) McD's meeting was always a high point. I'll miss him dearly. Wishing comfort and peace to his H&L Family and loved ones.

People like Josh are one in million. He was an incredible leader, but more importantly he was just a great human being. I'm going to miss seeing his big personality and heart, his passion for developing people, and his personal friendship.

It is truly special when you can feel like you know someone without having the chance to meet them in person. Josh wore his heart on his sleeve, and he let it be known how important every person in the H&L family was to him.

I always looked forward to hearing Josh speak on our company calls. He was able to find a positive in every situation, and you could really tell he was a caring and compassionate person.

I will always remember his infectious, bellowing laugh that you could hear from across the office — I used to say I wanted it as my cell phone ring tone! My deepest sympathies to his H/L & McD colleagues and family. Josh definitely lived his life!

I’m so sorry to hear about Josh. Although I didn’t work closely with him the three years I was there, he was so friendly and kind and brought a great energy to the agency. Sending love to you all and his family.

A beautiful tribute. I was privileged to work in partnership with Josh over many years. Yes, a savvy marketer for sure. However best of all, one of the kindest humans I've ever know. My world is a bit darker today. I am so sorry for your loss.
